Department of Chemistry
The Department of Chemistry was established in the year 1957, under the professorship of Prof. Subba Rao. Our founder manager Sri. R. Shankar, who was a graduate in Chemistry, took keen interest in the formation of the department. Distinguished teachers like Prof. Subha Rao, Prof. Venketaramanand and Prof. Sarada Ponnan were some of the former heads of the department.
The department was elevated to a post graduate department in 2001 and later to a research center in 2008. Initially, the postgraduate programme was in Applied Chemistry (2001 to 2018 batch) and from 2019 onwards, the programme was changed to Chemistry. Currently, the department offers undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD programmes in chemistry under the University of Kerala. Over the years many of our students have become University Toppers both in undergraduate and postgraduate streams. The Department has produced 5 PhDs so far and 4 PhD students are presently working at this center. There are 4 recognized PhD Guides at the center and among them 3 are faculties of our department.
The department has a set of very eminent teachers having PhD and Post-doctoral experience. They are actively involved in socially relevant research such as nanomaterials, smart materials, biopolymers, polymer nanocomposites, sensors etc. to achieve sustainable development goals. They have been publishing their research output in peer-reviewed international journals with high impact factor. In addition, they have contributed many book chapters and review articles. Some of them are the part of editor and reviewer board of international journals. They have active collaboration with research institutions of national and international reputation such as University Departments (University of Kerala), International and Inter University Centre for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (Mahatma Gandhi University), University of Perugia, Italy, University of Warsaw, Poland etc. The department has initiated the publishing of an online international peer-reviewed journal-'International Journal Of Advanced Interdisciplinary Sciences (IJAIS)' to disseminate new and original knowledge in all fields of science and emerging technologies. The department has also come up with the concept of publishing a yearly newsletter 'Thanmatra' to be contributed and compiled by chemistry students on recent advances in sciences.
We are providing consultancy services to other institutions using our research facilities.
