Department of Botany
The Department of Botany was established in 1959 and Prof. E.K Santha, who was the first Head of the Department, was also the Principal during period 1959-1970. The Department presently offers B.Sc. Botany course under the Choice Based Credit and Semester System. Mushroom cultivation and marketing, the open course offered by this department gives hands on training in mushroom cultivation and marketing to students. Our department has outreach programmes in conserving Mangroves, sacred groves and home gardens. The faculties of the department have been active in publishing research papers, participating in national and international conferences and seminars and also in organizing seminars and workshops. One of the faculty members is a research guide in the University of Kerala and under his guidance three students are doing their PhDs. A Senate Member in the University is also a faculty of our department. One of the faculties is a member of the State Biodiversity Board. Students are trained to attend Seminars, Workshops, Research institute visits so as to improve their scientific temperament. The students are encouraged to actively involve in extracurricular activities especially in National Service Scheme and Nature club activities. The department is continuously producing rank holders with highest turnover ratio in higher studies especially in post graduate and doctoral degrees. The faculties also help the students to get familiarized with the local plants used traditionally as first hand medicines. The department also maintains a beautiful herbal garden in front of the Campus which speaks volumes of the importance of conserving medicinal plants.
