Department of Economics

The Department of Economics, one among the oldest departments of the college had its inception in 1957. Sri Sam Kurien was the founder Head of the Department. The department offers both an undergraduate and a Postgraduate programme in Economics. While the degree programme with Economics main was started in the year 1957, the master's programme in Behavioural Economics and Data Science commenced in the year 2020. The department has the distinction of being one among the two colleges under the University of Kerala which has been sanctioned an innovative Master's programme in an emerging area for the first time. The department at the undergraduate level has two batches with 420 students.The growth of the department over its humble beginnings to a stunning growth over the past six decades has been possible with the vision, relentless effort and an equally dedicated team of faculty who nurtured it. We have a committed team of five faculty members of which four have doctorate degrees and one is pursuing the same.

The Department is well known for its academic and research activities with several publications by its faculty members. The Department has been frequently organising National Seminars, International and national webinars, workshops, invited lectures, debates and discussions on emerging economic issues along with field and industrial visits to help the students to apply their theoretical knowledge and make them competent enough to face the challenges of the job market. The Department also offers applied economic courses like Mathematical Economics along with traditional courses which will open the doors of research with statistical insight to students.

Through ECOSPIRIT, the Economics Association of the department, students play a prominent role and take the lead in organising many innovative and interdisciplinary programmes. They are encouraged to learn beyond classrooms by actively involving in activities like Union and State budget Evaluation, skill development and personality enhancement programmes. Our students have been constantly bagging ranks and awards at the University level for both curricular and co-curricular activities.

The Department takes great pride in conducting the AD Shroff Memorial Elocution competition an interdepartmental competition for degree students sponsored by the Forum of Free Enterprises, Mumbai over the pastyears. "Cross Fire" is a debate club designed meticulously by the department which provides a platform for the students to debate on various current economic and social issues which will help them to unleash their talents, sharpen their analytical skills and explore their potentials.

The department which has an enviable legacy of illustrious teachers and alumni has carved a niche for itself as a centre of learning in Economics for young women. Smt Veni Raj, IRS, Smt Vani Raj IRS, Smt Mini Chandran, IRS , Ms Reshma Rajeevan, IES are some of the distinguished alumni of the department besides a great list of stalwarts working in numerous fields.

The Department attempts to offer an inexorable curriculum added with knowledge driven activities for both academic and professional excellence by the students. The learning environment is enhanced by using both conventional and technology driven teaching methods to prepare the students for an optimistic and aspiring future. On the whole, both the students and faculty act in unison to make teaching learning process a great success with a purposeful mission.
